Distributing long shawls to women, aged women, handicapped, and widows in remote areas.

Program Overview
Program Completion & Impact
Distribution Achievement
Our Long Shawl Distribution Program successfully provided warmth and dignity to vulnerable women across three districts, honoring both their practical needs and cultural traditions.
Final Impact:
- 1,500 long shawls distributed
- 40-50 communities (bastis) reached
- Three districts covered: Gorkha, Dhading, and Chitwan
Geographic Coverage
Gorkha District High-altitude communities where elderly women and widows face harsh winter conditions with limited resources. Distribution prioritized women heads of household and those with mobility challenges.
Dhading District Hill region settlements where women often lack access to adequate winter clothing. Focus on pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as women with disabilities who face additional vulnerabilities.
Chitwan District Rural communities where vulnerable women manage households independently, often excluded from traditional support networks.
Program Outcomes
Through women-led distribution events and community consultations, we ensured shawls reached those most in need while maintaining cultural sensitivity and dignity. Each distribution event created opportunities for:
- Women's circle gatherings and solidarity building
- Winter wellness and health education
- Community network strengthening
- Discussion of ongoing needs and solutions
Beneficiary Impact
The versatile 180cm × 70cm wool-blend shawls serve multiple essential functions:
- Daily protection against harsh mountain winds and cold
- Cultural garments for traditional ceremonies and events
- Practical baby carriers for mothers with infants
- Additional bedding layers during freezing nights
- Head coverings for sun and weather protection
Community Feedback
Recipients expressed deep appreciation for the program's respectful approach, noting that the shawls provided both warmth and dignity. Women reported feeling recognized and valued by their communities. Local women's groups highlighted the importance of the accompanying gatherings, which strengthened social bonds and created ongoing support networks.
Many women shared that this was their first new winter garment in years, with some noting the shawls' durability would serve them through multiple winter seasons.
Cultural Considerations
The program successfully honored local traditions through:
- Pattern and color selections appropriate to each region
- Distribution timing aligned with cultural calendars
- Women-led event facilitation respecting local customs
- Involvement of local artisans where possible
